The weekend is set to become a festival of Triathlon with 11 races scheduled across the weekend of the 13th and 14th of July. Over 170 athletes are expected to impress the crowds on Saturday between the Elite and Junior races, while Sunday plays host to a variety of races between the closely fought National Series competition, the Aquabike, Duathlon, Try-a-tri, Relay, and the Youth Series. Over 1,000 athletes are expected to descend on Cork City over the two days of Europe Triathlon Cup and the Cork City Triathlon, with the Youth Series races expected to be the largest field to date.

Cork City Triathlon is not just a race; it's an adventure that begins in the River Lee. Athletes will dive into the river and navigate a swim course that showcases the picturesque beauty and serenity of Cork's natural landscape.

Athletes will transition onto their bikes for a route consisting of five 4km laps taking place against the picturesque waterfront setting of Marina Park. The flat but technical bike course offers spectators a chance to follow the race at multiple points and witness some of Europe’s best triathlon talent on numerous occasions throughout the day.

With the run course winding around and through Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Cork City Triathlon will add itself to Cork’s rich sporting history.

Whether you’re there to race, spectate, or support, Cork City Triathlon promises an atmosphere of sport and fun for all, as a coming together of the whole Triathlon Community,

Speaking on the announcement Gordon Crawford, Performance Director,  said "I’m delighted with the announcement of the Cork City Triathlon, incorporating the Europe Triathlon Cup for elite and juniors in 2024.

A European Cup race at the centre of the festival of triathlon racing in Cork will play a massive role in the development of triathlon in Ireland and key to this is the connection between our elite athletes, our triathlon clubs and wider triathlon community."

Race Director Paul Mooney further added "Cork City is so accessible by road, rail, sea or air making the location for a Triathlon idyllic. One thing Corkonians have in common is a love for their City, we are extremely proud of what we have to offer. There is nothing more thrilling than getting to be up close watching future Olympians race at top speeds. I am also really excited about the Youth Series, as the next generation of the sport will get an opportunity to race and be cheered on by family and friends.

It is a city location, with the swim being a wide open river, a flat and fast yet technical bike course. and a run that finishes near Supervalu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, an iconic stadium for many.

Additionally, Marina Park is a beautiful urban park, which will hopefully become home to Triathlon in Munster. It connects to a Greenway which stretches to Passage and beyond to Monkstown, Carrigaline, and Crosshaven."

Looking towards the future Ronan Forde of Midleton Tri Club added "A European elite sprint distance event coming to our City, based on the Marina is a very exciting time for Triathlon in Cork. It brings some of the best talent in Europe to Leeside to showcase the very finest, fast, action packed racing. It will be a spectacle that I'm sure will encourage young Triathletes with big aspirations to keep motivated and also inspire young kids to get started in our sport."

Shane Califf, Director of National Governing Bodies, Sport Ireland, acknowledged that "Triathlon Ireland and its affiliates have an extensive record of delivering high quality races in beautiful, scenic locations. In bringing elite and youth races to Ireland, Triathlon Ireland is delivering against its strategic vision for inclusion, youth development and high performance."

With an expected vibrant atmosphere, Cork City Triathlon invites athletes, families, and sports enthusiasts to experience the excitement of triathlon in a city renowned for its hospitality and charm.
